What We Do

What We Do

The Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) connects the people and communities of Lancaster and York Counties to one another and to the nation through stories about this nationally important place. The National Heritage Area welcomes visitors, cultivates partnerships, and nurtures a strong regional identity. All of our work focuses on regional projects, public programs, and strong partnerships!

The Susquehanna River has long been a corridor of culture, commerce, and exploration. As rich in history as it is in breathtaking scenery, spectacular wildlife, and soul-restoring recreation, the river is a place for experiencing the stories and wonders of America.

Projects

We work with partners on initiatives in York and Lancaster Counties that fulfill our National Heritage Area Management Plan. Our priority is supporting projects that safeguard and highlight the Heritage Area’s treasured resources. Currently, SNHA’s major regional projects include the Cuff’s Run Project, Susquehanna Discovery Center & Heritage Park, and Riverfront Boat House Project.

Public Programs

We connect people to nationally significant stories and our historic landscape through our two visitor centers: Columbia Crossing and the Zimmerman Center. Our visitor resources help visitors find and explore the river’s extensive network of parks, trails, and heritage sites. Our River Discovery Boat Tours give thousands of people an on-water experience every year. Our National Park Service field trip programs cultivate the next generation of river stewards.

Partnerships

We draw together the communities of Lancaster and York to enhance economic vitality and create a strong regional identity. Our Heritage Partnership Program gives access to grants, resources, and technical support to improve heritage experiences in our region. SNHA has a Partnership Network to work on national, state, regional, and local levels.
