A lifelong Lancaster County resident, Crystal Schreffler has been hiking the regional trails since she could walk. Her grandfather, an avid hiker and birder, taught her a lot about land conservation, recycling, composting, and wildlife appreciation. As she grew older, she earned a degree in journalism at Millersville University and went on to be a contributing writer at Susquehanna Style magazine for ten years, where she had a wonderful opportunity to interview local businesses and individuals about their contributions to the community. Working at a local library was another experience where she was able to get to know the members of the area through their literary interests. Crystal looked forward to the friendly banter with patrons while recommending her favorite books. She also added new plant and nature titles to the collections of two separate libraries within the Lancaster County Library System

Her fondness for the outdoors and conservation led her to become a volunteer for the Lancaster Conservancy, a PA Master Watershed Steward, a PA Master Naturalist, and to earn a certificate in Ecological Habitat Stewardship that educates others about the importance of native plants. She also is the co-leader of a Girl Scout troop, as well as a Service Unit Delegate. She loves chatting with the visitors to Columbia Crossings about hiking, biking, kayaking, and local points of interest. She still considers herself a terrible birder, unlike her late grandfather, but enjoys carrying her binoculars on the trail just in case.
